Review Shedding Starlight

Shedding Starlight, the first book in the Howl of the Ancients series, swept me away from the first page. While I read it as an ARC, the final product clearly benefited from the feedback and revisions, resulting in a captivating read. The world-building, a blend of dark academia and supernatural elements within a werewolf society, is richly detailed and immersive. Cedar Hollow Academy, with its secrets whispering in the shadows, felt like a tangible place, and the unique magic system woven around the shifters and their connection to the stars added a fascinating layer to the narrative.

Nyx, our sassy and fiercely independent FMC, is instantly likeable. She doesn't back down from a challenge, and her growth throughout the story is genuinely satisfying to witness. Her internal struggles, particularly her burgeoning magical abilities and the complexities of her relationships, are portrayed with both vulnerability and strength. I found myself completely invested in her journey.

The love triangle, a central element of the plot, is expertly crafted. The author doesn't shy away from the emotional turmoil and difficult choices Nyx faces between the two captivating brothers. Both Kieran and Solis are compelling characters in their own right, each possessing a unique magnetism that kept me guessing—and completely torn—right until the end. It's the kind of love triangle that doesn't feel forced; the emotional connections felt authentic and added significant weight to the narrative. I admit, I'm a sucker for a good brotherly love triangle, and this one didn't disappoint.

While the plot is primarily focused on the romance and the unfolding mystery surrounding Nyx's destiny, the action sequences are well-executed and thrilling. The pacing is generally well-maintained, though I did notice some minor inconsistencies, primarily in the descriptions, as noted by other reviewers. A few instances of repetitive phrasing, such as the detailed descriptions of footsteps, occasionally broke the flow of the story, but this was a relatively minor quibble in an otherwise engaging narrative.

The biggest thing I wanted more of? Nyx's powers! While her abilities are hinted at and teased throughout the story, I'm eager to see their full potential unleashed in the upcoming sequel. The twist near the end was genuinely surprising and left me craving more answers. The ending provided a sense of closure while perfectly setting up the stage for the next book—leaving me with a very satisfying, "I need to know what happens next" feeling.

In conclusion, Shedding Starlight is a highly enjoyable paranormal romance with a compelling heroine, a captivating love triangle, and a mysterious plot. The slight imperfections in the writing are easily overshadowed by the overall strength of the story and its engaging characters. It's a must-read for fans of supernatural academies, forbidden love, and fiercely independent heroines. I'm already impatiently anticipating the next installment.
